"This picture depicts a partial inventory of a New England surveyor's equipment. A. Brown was active in the Hudson River region from the late 18th Century until about 1850. A chest of his tools and instruments includes: a vernier compass made by Henry Gattey, New York (ca. 1797-1804); a text by Amos Eaton (1830); sunglasses; a traveler's inkwell; and a daguerreotype photograph of Mr. Brown.
