Samuel Kern worked and lived in the Strasburg, Virginia area and was from the family that Kernstown, Virginia derives its name.  This pictured wooden compass is quite possibly his original patent model.  Kern was also a tool maker, and obtained at least one other patent for farm machinery.  He was born around 1775 and died in the 1850's.
